the U.S. Army at the age if 15 years at Portsmouth, OH, and served a three year
enlistment--mostly in the Philippines. He was engaged in Industrial School work
until World War I broke out when he again entered the U.S. Army. He was
commissioned a Lieutenant and was an instructor of Target Practice at Camp
Perry, OH, and trainer of colored troops at Camy McClellan Alabama until the
close of World War I. He again engaged in Industrial School work and
railroading for a few years until the call of the army life became too strong
to resist; so he again enlisted in Uncle Sam's Army. He was promoted to the
rank of Captain and saw service in many countries but his last fight was at
Attu, in the Aleutian Islands. While engaged in ousting the Japanese who had
taken control of that island, during his last charge both legs and onearm was
broken and he lay on the ground until morning and when help came he was frozen
to the ground. He spent quitesome time in hospitals and was mustered out of the
