In the name of God, Amen. I, JOHN HAGGARD, of the Province of South
Carolina and district of ninety six being weak of body but of sound memory,
Blessed be to God, do this day viz: the seventh day of March in the year of
our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy six make and publish this my
Last Will and Testament in the following manner (that is to say) FIRST, I
will and bequeath that all my estate real and personal be equally divided
between my beloved wife Mary Haggard and my son Jonadal Haggard and my daughter
Nancy Haggard, and when my son Jonadal Haggard arrives at the age of twenty
years which will be in the year of 1784 and on the seventh day of March that
then and at that time that all my estate both real and personal be sold at
Public Vendue and the moneys thence arising from the price of all my land,
goods and chattels be equally divided into three parts and my beloved wife and
son and daughter above named to have an equal share of said money given to
each of them and if either my son or daughter above named die before they
arrive to age of maturity that their part of said estate shall fall into the
possession of the survivor viz: whether it be my son or daughter AND I make
and ordain her my said wife Mary Haggard and William Moore to be my
executors of this my will in trust for the intents and purposes in this my will
contained.

From the settlement of South Carolina in 1671 until 1783 all vital
statistics and property records were recorded in Charleston. Since the

Episcopal Church held full sway in the early days of the colony, in 1706 an act
was passed making the parishes its legislative units. Regardless of church
affiliations, all persons were required to register their vital statistics with
the church officers. in 1783 offices of Registrar of Mesne (legal)
Conveyance were authorized in all counties.
By an Act ratified in 1769 the province of South Carolina was divided

into seven judicial districts: Charleston, Georgetown, Beaufort, Orangeburg,
Ninety-Six, Camden, and Cheraw. In 1798 District Ninety-Six was divided into
