DIKE and CLARA (HAGGARD) COMSTOCK

It was in 1903 and in that part of Crawford County, AR, known as Dripping Springs, Clara Mabel Haggard was introduced to this world on October 25th in the home of her maternal grandparents, Billy and Jane Stevens. She was the seventh child to be welcomed into the family of Will and Mollie Haggard. Less than a month later on November 21st, just a little ways north at the community called Uniontown, a lusty 14 pounder became the 5th child of Randolph and Temperance Comstock, born in the home his father built. He was named Ralph Klondike. And in that month when Clara is a "year older", Dike enjoys reminding her that he is so much younger.

Dike's father ran a store and while they did not farm, they had cows to milk, hogs to feed, a garden to tend, and horses and mules to take care of. Dike and his brother Barton, had enough chores to do but they managed to get away to Lee Creek to fish or swim. Both boys were given a steer to raise each year and besides fattening them, they also broke them to ride and went everywhere on them. And when it was time to sell them, they also rode them the eighteen miles to Van Buren.

Dike learned quickly and was a good student—when he felt like it—but he also was all boy and, well, his Aunt Minnie nicknamed him "Cyclone" so that gives you some idea. He taught his teachers a great deal of patience though. When he left the school room to go out to the "boys room", on the way (near the windows), he would scream like a banshee. He was the only one in the entire school who could do that and get away with it. You see the teacher boarded at the Comstock house and Randolph Comstock was the one who hired the teachers and saw to their salaries, etc. They couldn't very well spank a Cyclone, could they?

In those days, the eighth grade was high school and Dike graduated at 13, the youngest in his class. From the time he was a boy, he had two real interests: farming and cars. While still a boy and on his own he would borrow mules to plow land his father owned. He would plant it all by hand and when the oats were ready, he cut them with a hand sythe. He liked growing things and as Clara has said, "He has a green thumb--clear up to his elbow." But, cars fascinated him, too. When the first ones appeared around Uniontown, Dike would beg a ride, knowing he would have to walk back. On November 11, 1919, Dike entered the Rahe Auto and Tractor School in Kansas City, MO. He boarded with a policeman and his family and helped pay his way by doing the heavy housework for the family. He took the course twice to be sure he knew it well, and he had a "gift" for mechanics.

Clara's father ran the cotton gins and during her early years, they moved about quite a bit, finally settling in Uniontown about 1910. She had older brothers and sisters to help with the chores around the house, and she had younger ones that she had to look after sometimes. During the cotton ginning time, her dad had hired men to help him but when the biggest part of it was done, those men would go to other jobs. Then, when Will needed the help, he called his children. He would go early to the gin to start building up the steam necessary. When the steam was up, he would toot the gin whistle and that was the signal to the teacher to let the Haggard children go. The older boys helped keep the furnace going to keep the steam up and the tied off the bales. Clara's sister, Hester, swept the cotton out of the stalls while Clara and Carl fed the "suck". Carl always had to stick his head or hand in the "suck" and Clara would hang onto him for dear life, for fear he would be yanked away.

Clara and her friends made their own little dolls out of a handkerchief or piece of cloth, and once they needed hair for their dolls, Clara's friend offered her own. They made lovely wigs for their dolls but her friend's mother was not too happy when she saw the hunks of hair cut out of her daughter's pretty hair.

At school, Clara was a good student and always one of the best "spellers". Everyone was expected to stand up front and "say a piece", and some were good at it, reciting long poems with all the expression. Clara did not like to recite but she could sing and though she was shy about singing alone, she would get someone to sing with her. Her Dad taught and led singing and her proudest moments were when he would ask her to sing a duet with him in front of a large group.

She began learning to sew at a very early age and since this was before there were very many "bought" patterns, she also learned to cut her own. When she designed something new and wore it to a friend's house, she usually had to take it off and stand behind a door while they cut a pattern off of it. And, learning to embroider, crochet, and tat was a part of her growing up years. Clara said the Valedictory speech when she graduated with the other five in her class.

Dike and Clara knew each other all their lives. In the old school pictures they are usually seated close to one another. They married on December 4, 1921. They moved to Van Buren where Dike opened his own garage on February 1st and they lived in one room behind the garage. Both the Comstock and Haggard families were musical and in the evenings Dike taught himself to play on a $10 guitar and he and Clara would sit at the side of the bed singing two-part harmony to the old church songs. Later, he learned to play the banjo and played guitar and banjo with a small band.

In March 1939, they moved to Oklahoma City and after working for another mechanic for awhile, Dike had a gas station and his own garage. He specialized on Chrysler cars and his customers thought so much of him that they continued to call him after he retired and moved away. But that is getting ahead of the story. Dike bought lots on the corner of 24th and Classen and built a concrete block garage. He sold it in 1951, took Clara on their one and only vacation trip—a five week drive to California and Utah, etc. When they returned, he returned to work in his enlarged garage at home.

Everywhere they ever lived, Dike had a garden and set out trees and flowers. When he became interested in pecan trees, he set some out in his yard and the more he studied and worked with them the more interested he became. He was always reading the "farms for sale" want ads and it became a serious search as the "bug" to have a pecan farm bit harder. It was in March 1955 when he found what he was looking for, but he saw something there that Clara did not see. It was bare, wind swept, dirt with clumps of blackjacks, an old shack of a house, and a log barn that was falling in. (The house was rented at the time and as the four or five children came running out, Clara whispered, "No one decent would live in that house." Clara didn't know she would live in that house for the next nine years.)

So the farm was bought, a garage was built, fences put up, a new tractor bought, and the "weekend farming" began. Dike decided they would move in five years but meanwhile he could be working in the garage during the week and the farm on weekends. The tree rows had to be marked off and the holes drilled. Each hole was refilled with top soil and leaves. That fall and winter Dike set out over 500 improved type pecan trees, an orchard, and some 3000 shrubs and trees for windbreak. Between the trees, grain was planted, the straw from it turned under, fertilizer added, all to build the soil up. A tank on wheels was built to carry water to the young trees when there wasn't enough rain. Gophers proved to be the most harmful pest and they had to be trapped.

Dike was no longer interested in working on cars. There was so much to be done at the farm. There wasn't yet the money for a new house but Dike and Clara agreed—they were eager to move. The home in the city was sold and in March 1957 they moved into that old shack of a house. There was no hot water, no bathroom (just a path), the wind whistled in all around the windows and doors, and it seemed the only thing holding the house up was the umpteen layers of wallpaper. But life was good. There was room for chickens, a Jersey cow, cats and a garden big enough to feed an army. Dike added a room to the house, built a barn, and the old "Comstock Auto Service" was hung at the gate.

Clara took in sewing. She did alterations, cut down men's suits for boys, turned coats, and made clothes over. She made wedding dresses, graduation dresses, and with scraps she made potholders and doll clothes. She sewed for teachers to get kindergarten, piano, and dancing for June, Bill, and Mary Jane. She made the girls clothes Mary Jane didn't have (or want) a "bought" coat until she was sixteen and, the ones Mother made were always the prettiest. She designed their clothes, too, and always had a talent for it. The blouses she made were special indeed. Bill sold the potholders door to door (10c ea.), and around Christmas time dime stores stocked the doll clothes she made.

Clara grew gourds on their fence in the city and when they moved to thr farm there was room for even more. It was then that Clara launched (accidentaly) her new career. She wrote a letter about her gourd hobby to a farm magazine contest. Her letter was printed and the mail started coming—up to 50 letters a day from people wanting gourd seed! She got in touch with other gourd growers and added new sizes and shapes of gourds, and began making baskets, planters, and other things out of them. With her "hunt and peck" typing, she also began writing articles and fiction. Woman's Comfort magazine liked her style and invited her to join their staff. She has been writing a monthly column for them for fourteen years. There seemed to be so much interest in gourds that she wrote about them and was asked to write a regular column on gourd craft for another magazine, which she did for five years. She had a monthly column in another magazine for seven years and has written for two newspapers regularly. She wrote about making potholders out of scraps and was swamped with orders for potholders, so she manages to balance her writing, the gourd business, and the potholder business, plus the stack of mail. Articles about her childhood have proved so well liked that she is working on a book called, "When the World was Ten Miles Wide.

Dike and Clara finally built that new home in 1965. They designed it and Dike did most of the work himself. The pecan trees have grown surprisingly fast and large. Dike has cleared more land and planted more tree, learned to do all the grafting. He continues to plant grain and he bought a used combine which he overhauled himself (mechanic and farmer is a good combination). The farm, as one man said, "looks like the Garden of Eden." Dike and Clara celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on December 4, 1971. They named their farm "The Comstock Lode," and it has proven to be just as rich as that "other" Comstock Lode, but in a different way.

NOTE by CRH: Dike and Clara died sometime after 1976 when my brother Julian and I visited them while on the way to Rossville Cemetery, also in Lincoln County. The "Comstock Lode was every bit as beautiful as Mary Jane said it was probably the prettiest place in Oklahoma!

MY OWN THANKSGIVING DAY

by

Mary Jane Comstock

All of us have certain dates marked in our memory—dates that remind us of an event that was important to us. And at Christmas we think back to other Christmases. On New Years we tend to review our life and make vows to improve ourselves. My special date is September 7th. When it approaches I remember and review and celebrate. Usually I do it in my own thoughts but this year, I will celebrate by sending gifts to loved ones, letters to many others, and a special offering of prayers for everyone. On my own Thanksgiving Day, I celebrate being alive! For on September 7th, twenty five years ago, I almost died.

And, when I did live, it was said that polio had left me in such a state that I could not live very long. That was twenty five years ago—a quarter of a century. Each year I have marveled at the blessing of another year of being alive has meant, and some how as the 25th one arrives, I am overwhelmed just thinking of what these "extra" years have brought.

I've had 25 more years to laugh, to enjoy, to think and learn, to explore my own mind and grow mentally and spiritually, to find God and the truth of Christ's teachings. Twenty five more years to learn about myself and others, to face obstacles and adjust when things can't be as I want them.

It has meant extra years with my family members, watching infants grow to adults, sharing the ups and downs of school days, jobs, vacations, and the everyday routine of living. I was HERE to watch and listen and feeling proud as my Dad turned a run-down farm into a Garden of Eden. I was HERE to see twigs grow into mature producing pecan trees. I was HERE to watch and even to help as my Mother added writing to her skills and turned out articles, fiction, a monthly column, and even a book. I've been there for these extra twenty-five years to share the joys and heartaches with them. Oh, thank God for that!

In these 25 years, I've made new friends, enjoyed more good books and music, tried more hobbies, expanded my interests in history, farming, gardening, art, birds, and so many more subjects. And, thanks to television, I've had a front row seat at news events, drama, Olympics, men on the moon! Laurel and Hardy, and Walt Disney, and Will Rogers all live on television.

I've had 25 more years to watch the seasons change—to see springtime burst with color over winter's gray with green leaf and blossoms, to the song of the wren and the smell of the rain on the wind. Twentyfive more summers of hot, lazy days with cicadids buzzing in the trees, the mockingbird in the tip top of the oak singing every song, and the grain turning golden under the purple haze of the vetch blossoms. Twenty five more autumns of red and gold and orange with leaves dancing across the yard followed by an old mama cat who becomes a kitten again to chase, and pecans falling as summer's white puffy clouds become heavy and dark. Twenty five more winters in the warmth and safety of home with everyone well, the shelves and freezer groaning under summer's bounty and Mother's busy hands, as winter winds howl and threaten.

These extra years let me discover my own talent for writing and how exciting to find characters and plots popping into your brains so quickly that you can't type fast enough. What a joy to see that work published, to get paid for it, and even have strangers compliment you on it. I've had time to compile a book on our family history, and one of my short stories. I've had time to get back to drawing and begin to learn how to paint with watercolors. I've had my work selected in national contests. I've written for and helped edit magazines for the handicapped. I've had 25 more years to try to accomplish something.

I've had 25 more Christmases, 25 more Easters, 25 more birthdays. I've had 25 more years to enjoy rain on the roof, butter melting on hot homemade bread, the smell of just mowed grass, the softness of a kitten, the wild flowers along the road, corn and tomatoes straight from the garden, the cheeping of baby chicks, the comfort of a quilt on a cold day. There's so much!

I cannot help but think of all I would have missed if I hadn't had these "extra" years. It is so GOOD to be alive.

Life is a spark from the whirl of time—

We paint a picture, pen a rhyme.

Write a story and life is done,

Or is it? Maybe it's just begun!

DAUGHTER MAKES FOLKS GLAD, PROUD

Letter to the editor:

Our crippled child wasn't molested. We didn't go to see her and find her face bruised, or teeth knocked out, because we kept her at home!. The first night she could breathe outside the iron lung, we brought her home from the hospital—she was more helpless than she was the day she was born. We set up a hospital bed and bought our first television set. This was in 1951.

The next 25 years her Daddy lifted her on and off the bedpan. It took both of us to lift her in and out of her wheelchair. She was a 5'7" baby to be tended 24 hours a day. We never had a babysitter. I spoonfed her for she couldn't lift her hand to feed herself, or even scratch her nose.

We took her everywhere we went. We took her to the pecan grove and she lay on an army cot while we picked pecans.

We never dreamed of putting her in an institution. She was our responsibility and it was a labor of love. I don't believe God just meant for us to keep our healthy children--while her body was paralized.

She had a "made-up mind!" She compiled a genealogy book of 12 lines of our two families, tracing back to 1620. She wrote five books—wrote and sold 493 short stories (to Lookout, Progressive Farmer, Sunshine, and War Cry). She sold fiction to every church magazine except one. She sold 234 juvenile stories, the Sunday School papers being her best markets, and over 200 articles about farming, Arabian horses and cattle—and much Western history.
