February 15, 1811 Tennessee newspaper reported "Timothy Carrell, living on Duck River, has taken up a sorrel mare . . . on January 26, 1811, the mare's value was appraised at $20." The newspaper reported several other stray horses captured by early Bedford County settlers. Timothy Carroll (or Carrell) is mentioned in another newspaper article of February 8, 1811 as living on the Barren Fork of Duck River, Bedford County (now Coffee County). In a July 30, 1811 newspaper article, a James Carroll (also Carrel), believed to be Timothy's brother, is identified as living on Fishing Fork of Duck River. The Duck River had its origin northwest of Manchester, Coffee County, where the Barren and Bark Camp Forks unite.

Timothy may have had the opportunity during his early life to be among some great men of history destined for high political office. Bedford County was represented in the U.S. Congress by Andrew Jackson from 1823-1827 and by James K. Polk serving as U.S. Representative from 1825-1833 before they moved on to much higher political office.

Timothy Carroll along with James Haggard (father of John Milton Carroll's wife Martha) were chain carriers for surveyor Joel Webster "for John Carroll one hundred acres of land situate in Bedford County on the waters of Spring Creek a south branch of the Barren Fork of Duck River on June 13, 1827. This was entry No. 1202 of Tennessee Land Grant No. 10932 for 100 acres to John Carroll on file in the Tennessee State Archives, Nashville. It is possible that the hand written document contains the signature of Timothy Carroll, however, it is likely that it was transcribed by someone else into the official record book. In a February 12, 1828 land grant from the State of Tennessee to Felix Carroll, Timothy is identified as living on adjacent acreage.

From another survey record of Joel Webster made September 13, 1830 in Bedford County, Felix Carroll and Joseph Adams were the chain carriers "by virtue of Entry No. 1136 for 100 acres entered in the name of Timothy Carroll dated December 28, 1826". The grant was authorized under the provisions passed by the Tennessee State General Assembly on November 22, 1823 with supplemental acts of December 28, 1826. This Land Grant No. 17195 awarded to Timothy Carroll by the State of Tennessee was signed by Governor James C. Jones on November 26, 1841. The grant was recorded on January 4, 1842 and is on file in Land Grant book 20, page 254 for Middle Tennessee. No explanation is offered for the delay from September 30, 1830 when the land was surveyed until it was signed by the governor eleven years later. The folded survey document in the State Archives contains what is believed to be Timothy Carroll's signature on the outside of the document with other handwritten notes. The signature appears very similar to that of the June 13, 1827 chain carrier. The grant awarded Timothy Carroll 100 acres on Barren Fork of the Duck River in what is now southwest Coffee County north of Tullahoma, TN. Price paid for the 100 acres was one cent per acre or $1.00. The survey description identifies Timothy living on property east of his grant with Felix Carroll and John Carroll owning adjacent properties. Current maps show a Carroll Hollow north of Tullahoma and a Carroll Creek flowing northward into the Duck River. There is also a Carroll Cave in the area shown on many maps. Obviously, these place names were taken from early Carroll landowners.

Nothing more is known of Timothy until his death in February 1837. The court minutes of the recently established Coffee County (Court Minutes covering February Term, 1837, page 61) on a motion brought by Felix Carroll reported that Timothy Carroll had "departed this life intestate" and named Felix Carroll administrator of his estate. Felix was identified as a son of Timothy. Felix Carroll, John Carroll and James Yell (likely a son-in-law and long time neighbor) entered into a $400 bond assuring the proper administration of the estate. Timothy was about 62 years old when he died. According to family legend of Coffee County descendants, he is likely buried in the Carroll or Carroll-Robertson Cemetery in the Mount Vernon community northeast of Tullahoma, Coffee County, TN. Only about a half dozen grave markers could be located during a visit to this cemetery in May 1991 with over fifty sunken graves and/or depressions suspected of being graves. The cemetery has been unkept for many years with large saplings growing on grave sites. The legible markers revealed the last burials in 1895 to 1905 with one Carroll infant buried in 1913. (Clara, daughter of R. L. and Mary Carroll, born/died March 13, 1913).

Agness Carroll, Timothy's wife, survived him because she is named as Aggy Carroll on the 1840 census of Coffee County living next door to her son, Felix Carroll. The exact time and place of her death is unknown but she likely died between 1840 and 1850 because she is not on the 1850 census of Tennessee. She is likely buried in the Carroll Cemetery near Timothy.

Felix Carroll, CA1, son of Timothy and Agness (Hickenbottom) Carroll, was born in Virginia. The Carrill family Bible of James M. Carroll, son of Felix, (Owned by Anna Carroll of Harrison, Boone, AR) shows that Felix was born 3 August 1797, Richmond, Henrico, VA. It is questioned that Richmond was his birthplace since Timothy and Agness were married 300 miles to west 14 months earlier, however, these early pioneers did a lot of traveling. Felix married first ca. 1822, Bedford County, TN, Martha Morrow, born ca. 1799, GA. Felix moved southward to Lawrence County, TN, before Martha's death between 1850-1858. They had nine children (unidentified).

On October 15, 1858 in Lawrence County, TN, Felix Carroll, CA1, married secondly, Dicey Grissom, widow of William B. Bell who had recently died. Dicey was born 13 May 1821, in Tennessee and was 37 years old when she married Felix. He was 61. Felix died 18 June 1871, Lawence County, TN. Dicey died ca. 1888, Collin County, TX. They had a son (unidentified).

John Milton Carroll, CA2, son of Timothy and Agness (Hickenbottom) Carroll, was born ca. 1799/1801, VA, died 10 April 1874, buried Carroll Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, Coffee, TN, married ca. 1833, Martha "Mattie" Haggard, H118238, daughter of James and Jane (Dunkard) Haggard, was born 1816, Wartrace, Bedford, TN, died 18 February 1893. The 1850 census shows John to be a farmer in the Fifth District of Coffee County, TN. They had nine children:

1. James Gwin Carroll, CA21, born 13 July 1834, Wartrace, Bedford, TN.

2. Samuel Wilson Carroll, CA22, born 15 October 1836, Wartrace, Bedford, TN.

3. Timothy M. Carroll, CA23, born 11 July 1839, Wartrace, Bedford, TN, died at the age of 76 in Tullahoma on 11 July 1915, and is buried in Carroll Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Community, Coffee, TN.

4. Dr. Robert Henry Carroll, CA24, born 1843, Wartrace, Bedford, TN, married fist 18 March 1866, Nancy Overcast; married secondly Billie ?.

5. Jesse Ellis Carroll, CA25, born March 1845, Wartrace, Bedford, TN.

6. Nancy Jane Carroll, CA26, born 1847, Wartrace, Bedford, TN. She answered a marriage advertisement and moved to Utah, according to Cleo Carroll Gilbert. Died 18 February 1898, Coffee County, TN, according to Neel's Chapel Methodist Church records.

7. Martha "Mattie" Carroll, CA27, born 1849, Wartrace, Bedford, TN. Never married. Neel's Chapel Methodist Church records lists her on membership rolls prior to 1899. Mattie lived with her niece Effie Pheese. Died in Athens, AL.

8. Felix A. Carroll, CA28, born 1852, Wartrace, Bedford, TN.

9. William G. P. Carroll, CA29, born 1855, Wartrace, Bedford, TN.

John or Jack as he was later called, was obviously a respected citizen of Coffee County. He served as Judge of District 5 according to County Court minutes and was one of the original trustees of the branch of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, which came to be known as Cribbs Chapel in the 1850s (ref.: "Historic Normandy" by Jerry Cook). Mattie was also a Methodist.

On October 11, 1827, Land Grant No. 10932 was surveyed for John Carroll "by virtue of Entry No. 1202 for 100 acres in the name of John Carroll dated June 13, 1827 . . . on the waters of Spring Creek, a south branch of the Barren Fork of Duck River", Bedford County, TN. This was the grant surveyed by Timothy Carroll and James Haggard as chain carriers. John was also the recipient of Tennessee Land Grant No. 7570 for 50 non-contiguous acres northwest of Timothy's 100 acre Grant No. 17195 and another 50 acres southwest of Timothy's grant.

On December 1, 1885, John sold 160 acres including the homeplace in District 5 to William Davidson for $850 excluding one acre of land deeded to the Methodist Episcopal Church. Another mention of John Milton Carroll appears in "My Native Health" written by John Owen Blanton, probably around the turn of the century. "John Carroll, Uncle Jackie, was an old timer. He lived near Mt. Zion Methodist Church and was liberal in feeding the large crowds that came to the church. Come one, come all was the invitation. Aunt Mattie, his wife, was a sister to Rev. Robert Martin Haggard and a great and good woman. Jame Gwin, their oldest son, died a prominent official of the N. & C. Railroad. Robert, another son, became a good physician. Phillip was a magistrate, a first class citizen, married a Miss Fowler and died early."

A final mention of John Milton Carroll is in the Neel's Chapel Methodist Church membership records. According to them, John "Jack" Carroll, died April 10, 1874. Martha (Haggard) Carroll, his wife, died February 18, 1893. John was about 74 years old when he died; Martha was about 77. Both are believed buried in the Carroll Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Community, Coffee County, TN.

Unlike his brother Felix, John Milton Carroll spent his entire life in Coffee County. The nine children of John and Martha Carroll were probably born in Coffee County, TN (or Bedford County before Coffee County was formed in 1836). Many of John's descendants continue to live in Coffee County, TN, today not too far removed from where Timothy, Felix, John and William owned property on Duck River.

James Gwin Carroll, CA21, son of John Milton and Martha "Mattie" (Haggard) Carroll, was born 13 July 1834, Wartrace, Bedford, TN, died 22 February 1892, married 13 July 1853, Elizabeth C. Ross, born 1831, TN. They had a daughter:

1. Minervy Carroll, GA211, born ca. 1854, Wartrace, Bedford, TN.

James was a railroad conductor and after the Civil War moved into Tullahoma to become superintendent of the railroad's Sparta branch. About 1879 he built a grand home at 217 South Atlantic Street in Tullahoma near one leg of the "Y" where the branch begins. The railroad continues to operate as the Caney Fork & Western. The home of Greek Revival architecture stood for 113 years until it was destroyed by arson on March 25, 1992. It became known as the Carroll-Mitchell House and had been nominated for the National Registry of Historic Places before it was destroyed. Floyd Mitchell, long time Tullahoma postmaster, mayor and descendant of James Gwin Carroll, lived in the house for many years before his death. The home included many unusual features including several wall paintings said to have been painted by an itinerant artist for his room and board and at the time of the fire valued by some accounts as high as a million dollars. (Ref.: Tullahoma newspaper article reporting the loss of the Carroll-Mitchell home). James Gwin Carroll died 22 February 1892 at the age of 57.

NOAH LEE CARPENTER OBITUARY

The Bellingham, Washington, Times

Thursday, January 10, 1924

People of Bellingham were extremely sad Sunday when it was learned that Grandpa Carpenter had passed away at the home of his grandson, William Carpenter. Although 90 years of age, yet Mr. Carpenter was hale and hearty and was downtown nearly every day. He hardly knew what it was to be sick and when he celebrated his ninetieth birthday last April he said he expected to live to be a hundred.

Noah Lee Carpenter was born April 29, 1833 on a farm near Nashville, TN. His mother was a second cousin of General Robert E. Lee. While a boy he attended the country public school. He was married while still young in Jefferson County, IL, to Elizabeth Clink, and to this union five children were born. His wife died in 1916, and a daughter at the age of sixteen.

Mr. Carpenter is survived by two sons: Sam Carpenter of Park Rapids, Minnesota, and Lem Carpenter of St. John, North Dakota; also two daughters: Mrs. Kjonaas of Park Rapids, Minnesota, and Mrs. Marcott of Rolla, North Dakota. He had seventeen grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren.

He was a very religious man and was converted at the age of 14 years and joined the Methodist Church. He was always active in church work and was licensed as a local preacher and served in this capacity when occasion offered. He came to Bellingham in 1917 and has since made his home with his grandson William. He always attended the Evangelical Church here and preached his last sermon in that church on his 90th birthday last April.

Mr. Carpenter took sick with pnemonia about a week ago and seemed to recover, but his heart gave out and he passed away last Sunday morning. The funeral services were held last Tuesday from the Evangelical Church. Thus another of the old pioneers has left us to join the great array of those who have gone before.
