By 1840 the listing is as follows: Gray, Nathaniel, Robert, and Samuel.

1850 — The family that had all lived at Welckers Mill are now in two areas of that county. (Welckers Millis very close to what is marked on modern maps as Oak Ridge. This is where the Department of Atomic Energy Research Facilities are located. They took thousands of acres of land in 1940-41 to make this facility. Many of the small communities just disappearedfrom existance and the folks moved out to other areas.) The migration of the 1850 era put a lot of folks from that same area into Bernardsville, Ten Mile, and other little communities "South of the River" — now identified by locating Ten Mile on a modern map by following Highway 58 out of Kingston toward Chattanooga. We had the following families:

1165 Jacob S. Haggard 29, Harriett 25, and Violett 7/12, all born in TN. (This was near modern day Harriman.)

1172 Jane Haggard 55, Rebecca 31, French 23, Margaret A. 14, and George Hembree 6.

1180 Samuel Haggard 56 b. NC, Elizabeth 55, Samuel M. 20, Josiah C. 16, Nancy A. 13, and John N. 12 (all the rest born in TN.)

1346 Robert G. Haggard 35, Mary 35, Jane 8, Gray 6, Partheny 3, Lorindy 1, Culverson Viles 20. (Robert South of River — more later.

1423 William H. C. Haggard 27, Nancy 30, Margaret 5, French 2.

1860 Census:

1454 William H. C. 40, Nancy 40, Margaret 16, Denton P. 13, French 11, Enoch 9, Robert A. 6, Mary Jane 2. (Barnardsville P.O.)

105 R. G. Haggard 54, Mary 54, John 18, Mary 16, Robert 12, and Harry Rector 48.

Still in the Wilkers Mill area:

200 Rebecca Haggard 48, Cabe 17, Jane 70, Margaret 30.

Cemetery Records:

Henry H. Haggard, Company K, 3rd KY Infantry, in Oral Cemetery, Highway 70 E.

Robert Haggard, died 1887, 1 infant died 1887, 1 infant no date, buried on Thief Neck Island in middle of Tennessee River. This is the one listed in 1571 above with wife Mary. She is also buried there as far as we know. This is one of the areas where the Tennessee Valley Authority came in and moved all identifiable grave sites before the dams were closed and the embayment of the river to form what is now Watts Bar Lake was enacted. Many family cemeteries were just put under water, either because the family decided not to move them or there was no one to identify the remains in unmarked graves so that they could be moved and marked in another location.

Jane Haggard Bacon, born 6 December 1841, died 14 June 1918.

John H. Bacon, son of Jane and John H., born 11 May 1861, died 25 May 1892.

HISTORY OF JAMES OLIVER

by Noma Johnson

The oldest water-powered mill on Swan Creek, Taney, MO, and perhaps the oldest one in the Taney County, was built and operated by JAMES OLIVER, born ca. 1788, Boone County, KY, son of John and Martha (?) Oliver. James Oliver settled on Swan Creek in 1831. The mill was located about a mile north of the mouth of the stream and only a short distance above Cole's Spring. The ownership of the mill was later transferred to James' son William, who operated it for a time before selling it to George Gibson.

The exact year of its construction is unknown but it is believed to have been built in the mid-1830's and to have ceased operation just prior to the Civil War. This pioneer industry, being the only mill in the vicinity capable of grinding corn and sawing lumber, undoubtedly served many settlers. The anchoring irons that held the mill dam are still embedded in the bedrock where the old mill was built.

NOTE: The above information was taken from the book "The Land of Taney" by Elmo Ingenthorn, pages 169-170. Page 23 notes James Oliver was County Judge 1837-1844.
